He has provided extra-ordinary and exemplary contribution in establishing certain standards and ideals in the intellectual and scientific tradition of Indian Psychiatry. Dr. Rao continues to be inspiration and strength for coming generation of professionals. He was the longest served Editor of Indian Journal of Psychiatry (2004 – 2005, 2007 – 2018) and has been advisor to majority of major Journals of Psychiatry in India. He is currently the Editor – in - Chief of Journal of Psychosexual health (SAGE), Vice President cum President Elect, Indian Psychiatric Society (2025-26) and the President Elect of South Asian Society for Sexual Medicine (SASSM) affiliated to International Societies for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) (2023-25). He has also served as the Honorary General Secretary of Indian Psychiatric Society (2020-22) and the Secretary of Psychiatry and Human Sexuality Section of World Psychiatric Association (WPA) (2015 – 2022). Currently he is serving as Co-Chair of Psychiatry and Human Sexuality Section of WPA (2022-25). He is serving as President of Karnataka Sexual Science Academy. He is credited with more than 368 published papers in indexed journals, 200 other publications, 28 books / book chapters and more than 1500 Scientific Programmes at State, National and International level. He was organizing secretary for State, Zone and National Programmes of Indian Psychiatric Society (14), GERON (2), IASP (2), SASSM (2), SAARC (1) International Conferences. He has travelled extensively both in India and Abroad and his 60 th International travel was to Abu Dhabi, UAE for International conference of Asia, Asia-pacific, SAARC and Middle East Psychiatric Federations in June 2024. He has been a regular faculty at Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
